This plate features a child's garland made of braided reeds, with paper flowers, painted leaves and hand-made beads. Inspired by May Day celebrations.
I look back on a long career of teaching and sharing art, crafts and cultures from around the world with children of all ages, always on the lookout for interesting techniques and materials. I still have many samples and am using them to create my own personal tribal art in the form of papier mache plates, my favorite kitchen-table medium from childhood. These plates are a showcase of collections and techniques, like a museum of my own history, and of course as plates they also evoke eating and nourishment.
